Homecoming Buttons History
In the early days of Homecoming, buttons were a critical source of funding, accounting for a large portion of the budget from 1914 through the 70s. Representatives from sororities, fraternities, and other student groups would sell buttons around campus, branding students with Homecoming spirit. Until 1945, Homecoming queens were selected based on the number of buttons they sold.
From 1945 on, concert ticket sales and donations supplemented the Homecoming budget. Today, Homecoming is no longer funded by button sales. In fact, buttons are given away for free and have become a collector's item. They serve as a reminder of the grassroots history of this beloved University community event.
